Education, Business, and Community Leaders in NW Indiana Gather for GradNation Community Summit

Date: 11/4/2015 through 11/4/2015

(Northwest Indiana) Community officials, business leaders, and educators will come together on Friday, November 13 to examine local data and identify what's working and where challenges remain in the area's efforts to prepare young people for success in and out of school at the Graduate to Success Summit, hosted by READY NWI and America's Promise Alliance.

The Summit is part of 100 that will be held around the country through 2016. The Summits are co-sponsored by America's Promise Alliance as part of its GradNation campaign, a large and growing movement of dedicated individuals, organizations and communities working together to raise the national high school graduation rate to 90 percent by 2020, with no school graduating few than 80 percent of its students on time.

"The progress we are seeing toward the national goal of raising graduation rates is based on communities coming together to support and insist on better outcomes for young people, said John Gomperts, president and CEO, America's Promise Alliance. "Summits like the event in Northwest Indiana are rallying points for communities. America's Promise is delighted to support this effort and work with the leaders in Northwest Indiana and communities across the country to help advance this campaign."

Linda Woloshansky, President and CEO of the Center of Workforce Innovations and founding READY NWI leadership team member is delighted that her organization is serving as the organizer and co-host of this event with America's Promise. "The economic and overall wellbeing of Northwest Indiana is at risk unless we come together to support our children and youth better," said Woloshansky. "This Summit is a great opportunity to do that and put together a plan that builds on and strengthens what we are already doing, so that we can increase our graduation rates and ensure our young people are ready for success as they explore post-secondary education opportunities and careers," she added.

The Summit will feature keynote speaker Teresa Lubbers, Indiana Commissioner of High Education, along with remarks by an America's Promise representative, Mayor Thomas McDermott, and Don Babcock with NiSource who will present the Annual Indicators Snapshot on where the region is as a whole in reaching the national Big Goal 2025, that ties in with America's Promise graduation goals. The Big Goal is that by 2025, 60 percent of Northwest Indiana residents will have a post-secondary degree or credential. The Summit will present how focusing on the talent pipeline (middle school to high school, high school to college, college to jobs in our region) will be important in reaching the goal.
The premier sponsor of the national GradNation Community Summits initiative is AT&T, who support is part of AT&T Aspire, the company's $350 million commitment to graduate more students from high school ready for college and career. Other national sponsor includes GE Foundation and
local and regional sponsorships from Chase Bank/JP Morgan, NiSource, and the Center of Workforce Innovations.
